This whole thing that I write below is based on a 100% true story that happened to me right before New Year of 2006.

I was using my laptop and forgot to connect it to AC, was working on battery. Suddenly it went hibernating, because my batery was critical low. I didn't pay attention to it, because this is what usually happens when your battery is low, Windows just hibernates itself, that's how I'd configured my laptop.

10 minutes later I tried to open this laptop, but right after normaln Windows loading screen, something blue appeard and it shut down itself. After endless efforts to get into Windows, normally, through Safe Mode and actually through all modes there that come up with F8 at boot up, I reallized that my laptop is hopelessly crashed and I am at the edge of loosing all data.

I then tried to go with a bootup disk - but my laptop doesn't have a floopy! What to do? I tried Nero Burning it had a bootup disk option, i just chose it and it seemed to create a Bootup CD for me. I said "Hoooray! I got it!" But I was wrong. When I boot my laptop (I will call it PC after this point) with that Nero CD, I was able to get into my Hard Drive. I saw both of my partiotions there (C & D, both NTFS) and quickly got a record of all my passwords in my passwords text file. I tried to erase Windows Bootup Data files in C: but I realized that Nero's CD was using DR-DOS which is not allowing to delete anything from NTFS, only Read! I was really dissapointed because after removing CD my PC won't boot again, showing that same screen. Then I tried to use Windows XP Professional original CD to reinstall Windows, at the begining og setup process it just froze saying that my HDD was corrupted. I used Wind98, Win ME and Win 2000 CDs but all told me the same:(.

I went to BestBuy, it was around 9pm everywhere was closed but they were open, got a 2.5"" USB HDD Enclosure, so that I could insert my laptop's HDD into my home PC using USB and try to recover my data in that way. To my surprize when I plugged USB cable into my regular PC it froze showing me the same blue screen. I tried different options there (made my laptop HDD master, then slave and etc.. ), but it was still giving me that blue screen.



I was out of hope and decided to forget about all my data and buy a new HDD, went online and searched for prices. It seemed that I should pay something around 150$ for a good laptop HDD, I didn't want to give that money :)

I went back to Bestbuy and asked GeekSquad there if they could do something for me. Young guy there, around my age, plugged my HDD into his PC and LOL! He had the same blue screen! After trying a few other tricks he said : "It's Hopeless.". I explained him everyhitng I did and told him that I was able to see contents of HDD and that they are still there and OK, I just couldn't copy them anywhere. He then suggested me to try with LINUX, because my partitions were NTFS it is really hard to do something with them and any DOS environments don't have USB support for my hard drive enclosure. He suggested me to use KNOPPIX - a 1 CD Linux program downlodable free online. Now Knoppix was my only hope. I heard about it before, but never used it.

I went home, on my new car - just bought it a couple days ago, happy and at the same time curios whether I am going to fix this whole thing. Googled and found ISO of Knoppix (around 700MB). Thanks to my Comcast High Speed Internet, downloaded it with NET TRANSPORT (suggest it to everyone, free and cool) in about 1-2 hours and burned my ISO with Nero.

Jan 17,2006 As promised I am continuing. So now I had Knoppix on a CD, I boot it up and HOORAYY! Finaly I got back control of my laptop. I could see my C and D NTFS drives and could read data inside. Next question: how do I transfer them on to my PC which was in the same room?

Laptop doesn't have floopy, and I have external USB HDD but Knoppix didn't recognize it, but I also have Wireless Router in my house and laptop has built in wireless card. I went through Knoppix menu and on the taskbar saw wireless card icon, I clicked on it - it recongized my home wireless network!! I was so excited, can't even explain it here, but now there was another problem : laptop can't get an IP from DHCP of the wireless router (I use D-Link 521). I am new in desktop linux and couldn't find there any "ipconfig/renew" like in Windows. After a while I found this small utilty there that was renewing IP addresses. Finally I got my IP!! Then it was all over: I copied my files from KNOPPIX to my Windows PC, thanks to Unix SAMBA Network and my Wireless Router.

Now I had saved my all data - but it wasn't over. I had a HDD which I couldn't format (gives error), reinstall windows(gives error). Nothing! I remembered about old Norton Ghost, I had it on a russian bootable cd. Using Ghost I copied my D partition to C partition. This was the keypoint of all, by copying D to C it overwrote errors in C with fresh data from D. Then I was able to reinstall windows normally, the way we do it, and setup wasn't giving me any more errors. Mission accomplished.

Hope this article will help those who suffer like me in this 'strange' situation, and one more thing : never let your laptop hibernate because of low battery, you might never again be able to start it up again.
